  • Getting Kids to Bed on Time

Getting children to sleep is one of the hottest discussion topics with parents. Effective sleep can make a huge difference to a child`s health, behavior and development. Not enough sleep can lead to a miserable, whining child, while adequate sleep can lead to a pleasant and happy one. In older children a lack of sleep can lead to poor concentration and performance at school, a bad temper and, in extreme cases, may even lead to substance abuse.

Adults can get the most beneficial results by establishing appropriate sleep habits and patterns. The earlier you start the better. Young children who have established good sleeping routines normally take these into their teenage years.

While all children are not the same with respect to the amount of sleep they require, there are some generally accepted conventions. As a rule, younger preschool kids should get at least ten hours sleep a day. As a child gets older the time reduces. Around the age of nine or ten it is generally accepted that eight to nine hours sleep is enough.

As adolescence progresses a teenager actually needs more sleep to assist with the rapid development and growth of their bodies. The reality is that most teenagers get less sleep than they require due to their busier school schedules and increasing social activities.

There are a number of things that can be done to get your child to have a good night`s sleep. Sticking to a regular bedtime is most important, especially during the week. It is okay to relax this on the weekend and let the kids stay up a bit later. Together with a regular time for bed, a regular bedtime routine should be established. The routine should include a period where all activities are reduced. For example turn off the TV and put away toys. This should be followed by teeth cleaning and/or a bath, then maybe story reading just before lights out.

Unlock the secrets to a happy and well behaved child. Yelling, demanding, whining and tantrums do not have to exist in your home. Find out more at http://www.parentingfacts.net.
